Beverage Container Deposit and Return System
A new provincial beverage container regulation was announced in 1997 following several years of public consultation and study. The new regulation which came into effect in 1998 expands the deposit refund system to include all ready-to-serve beverage containers with the exception of milk and milk substitutes. Beverage containers requiring a deposit under the new system include all soft drinks, juices, beer, coolers, wine and spirits.
Plastic, glass, metal, gable top polycoat and aseptic (tetra pak) ready-to-serve beverage containers are now subject to the deposit/refund system. The beverage container deposit/refund system will divert a substantial portion of beverage containers from local landfills.
