Tire Recycling
The BC Environment Financial Incentives for Recycling Scrap Tires (FIRST) program encourages the recovery of used tires for manufacturing tire derived products and for energy recovery. Over 7,000 passenger and light truck tires were recycled from Regional District facilities in 2000.
Passenger and light truck tires, removed from rims, are received and marshalled at designated Regional District facilities where they are periodically collected for recycling. Recycling fees apply to medium truck tires and off road tires. Medium truck tries, those with an inner diameter greater than 16.5 inches and less than 25.5 inches are marshalled at designated sites for recycling. Off road tires, those with an inner diameter greater than 25.5 inches and/or a tread width greather than 12 inches are received for a fee at the Foothills, Mackenzie and Legrand Regional Landfills.
