Solid Waste Management Plan Review
The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) is required by Provincial legislation to prepare a
Regional Solid Waste Management Plan (RSWMP) for the approval of the Minister of
Environment. The implementation of solid waste management services began in 1994 based on
the concepts put forward by the RSWMP which establishes the RDFFG’s municipal solid
waste management strategy.
The RSWMP goals focus on waste prevention, reduction and environmental protection.
In June 2007, the RDFFG, under the direction of its Regional Board, issued a Request
for Proposals for consulting services for the review of the RSWMP. The scope of work for the consulting services included updating the current plan
to reflect current markets and technologies, as well as public and political direction.
The new RSWMP was completed on September 24, 2008. The key areas addressed in the RSWMP are:
- 3 R’s promotional and educational programs – Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle
- reduction and reuse programs
- multi-material recycling programs
- centralized composting programs
- expansion of the regional transfer station systems, and
- regional landfill upgrade and closure strategy
