Regional District Landfill & Transfer Station Operations

In addition to a number of transfer stations, the Regional District operates two municipal solid waste landfills, three rural landfills, and one select waste landfill. These landfills and transfer stations provide solid waste disposal and material processing services to four member municipalities and seven electoral areas. They are operated under permit from BC Environment, and are governed in operating and closure procedures by Provincial criteria.

Requirements include remedial plans for each site to establish methods by which they will be upgraded or closed. Site specific closure plans for each site are required to set out a closure schedule, procedure and postclosure environmental monitoring protocol. The Regional District is responsible to monitor it's closed landfills for at least 25 years.

Groundwater monitoring programs are active at the Foothills Boulevard, Valemount and Legrand Landfills. Landfill gas management is active at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill to collect and make use of gas created by the anaerobic decomposition of organic landfilled waste.

Regional District of Fraser-Fort George Bylaw No. 1746 establishes:

  • tipping fee rates;
  • definition of terms;
  • site regulations; and
  • permit and approval requirements for Controlled and Special Wastes.
